War Department, General Orders No. 45 (December 31, 1864)The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Boatswain's Mate Michael McCormick, United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in action, serving as Boatswain's Mate on board the U.S.S. Signal, Red River, Louisiana, 5 May 1864. Proceeding up the Red River, the U.S.S. Signal engaged a large force of enemy field batteries and sharpshooters, returning the fire until the ship was totally disabled, at which time the white flag was raised. Serving as Gun Captain and wounded early in the battle, Boatswain's Mate McCormick bravely stood by his gun in the face of the enemy fire until ordered to withdraw.
