GEOLOGICAL MARKER
This spot in Section 14, in the Town of Rietbrock, Marathon County is the exact center of the northern half of the Western Hemisphere. It is here that the 90th meridian of longitude bisects the 45th parallel of latitude, meaning it is exactly halfway between the North Pole and the Equator, and is a quarter of the way around the earth from Greenwich, England.
 MARATHON COUNTY PARK COMMISSION

The marker is located on Meridian Road, just north of its intersection with County Road U, Athens, Wisconsin 54411.

NOTE: You can see from the photos, that the marker is literally in the middle of cornfields. It will be on your right. I blew right past it because it was pretty well hidden in amongst the September-tall corn. If you're on Meridian Road and you come to the end of paved road and the beginning of a red dirt road, you've missed the marker. Turn around and head back towards County Road U; the marker will then be on your left.

NOTE: There are plenty of signs leading up to the marker. The first signs are on Highway 29 (see all signs below).

COOL TO NOTE: This is the exact point half-way between the Equator and the North Pole, and half-way between Greenwich Meridian and the International Date Line. (Ooops! So that makes it a "geographical" marker, not a "geological" marker . . .)

ONE MORE (VERY COOL) TO NOTE: Once you visit the marker, be sure to stop by the Wausau Chamber Visitors Center and sign the official "45x90 Club" registration book. This makes you a member of the Club and garners you a commemorative coin as proof of your visit. See also, 45 x 90 Club, related to this post at the Wausau Chamber Visitors Center.

And a big thank you to Andrew Wildman who sent me an e-mail and suggested this was a marker I wouldn't want to miss. He was so right!!!

 So here's the thing, the marker isn't at the exact spot;
the exact spot it out there in the middle of the corn field . . .

A year later, September 28, 2014.

On Highway 29 (no matter which way you're headed)

As soon as you turn off Highway 29 onto Cardinal Road . . .

Next sign . . .

Next sign . . .

Next sign . . .

Final sign, at intersection of County U and Meridian Road.
The marker is about 300 yards north of this intersection.

Tucked away inside the corn . . . and easy to miss!

Can you spot the marker?

Passed some cows along the way . . .

A herd of goats on Cardinal Road. I stopped to photograph . . .

. . . and then the dog popped up!

 His expression never changed!

Gorgeous puppy!

The marker is located in Poniatowski, Wisconsin.

Thanks for the link to my Howder Family page! The sign about "only a representation" appears to have been added since my visit several years ago. I guess they finally got tired of people pointing out the error?
